Calling all 4.10 gear peoples
It seems like everyone recommends 4.10 gears with a 6 speed..however I've also noticed that people also complain that they are weaker than the 3.42s and they sometimes break...I've pretty much heard both sides of the story...those that have never broken..and those that are on their 3rd or 4th pair...my situation is as follows....I don't go to the track I rarely race and if I do its just for fun or a rare occasion...I don't run sticky tires...and other than gears I'll only be running a different exhaust and possibly some minor bolt ons...thats it...I want something more fun for a daily driver and more fun when I blip the throttle....also on the highway I'd like to keep it at a reasonable rpm level....come on guys I know you can help me out here should I stick with the 3.42s go with 3.73s or go to 4.10s knowing what I'm after?

With 4.11s my RPMs are at just under 2000 rpms when cruising at 70 mph... so not too high at all.
However, I would definitely stay away from sticky tires... when I had 4.10s in my 10 bolt, I sheared at least 8 teeth off the ring gear launching at the track on Nitto drag radials. If you're going to spend your time with street tires on the street, then you should be fine if they're set up correctly.

If you do get a gear for the 10-bolt don't go from 3.42's to 3.73's it's simply a waste of time. Get the 4.10's, however if you plan on doing and racing, the best advice is to just put that $ in a jar and save up for a nice 12-bolt or 9".
I love my 4.10's.
Cheers.

I had 4.10's in my 10 bolt and cut 1.7 60's with drag radials never had an issue had over 60 passes on it burnouts and all. 4.10's are a fun gear, from 3.42's to them you row the gears sooner but that makes it more fun for me anyway. On the track, whoo yeah get to go all the way through 4th too.
My car hit so hard on the street in 2nd gear I decided to buy a 12 bolt to save me the worry and aggrevation so I sold the 10 bolt. It's still alive and well in an A4 Z28.

I'm all about the 4.10s, but if you rarely race, it is a waist of money. A 3.42 on blip between 3-4k is still very nice on these cars. I think you will have too many traction problems with the gear than it's worth. The 4.10 may be more fun, but whats the point if you are not on sticky tires. Guys with 4.10s blow nittos off their cars all the time and you want to run street tires. Save the money for a hood or something.
