Default Differential is LEAKING!!!

Why am I leaking a dark liquid that looks and feels like oil? It is the stock rearend with the stock 3.23 gear.It is leaking where the drive shaft meets the rearend. I recently had a head and cam package done and I now have about 380 rwhp. Could the gain of power cause somthing to stretch or bend???

Its been a pretty common problem on every f-body I've owned, even my stock 3800. It sounds like the pinion seals is leaking. There is supposed to be a replacement yoke that addresses this issue. I had it replaced on my wifes Z28 and we've not had a problem with it since.

I would like to know what's involved in changing it myself though. I have to gear up for the WS6 doing it soon I'm sure.

Default yep ... pinion seal is split or cracked.

After a few years of age, the pinion seal hardens and cracks or splits. Mine just went out of warranty in Septmeber and two weeks before that (fortunately) it started leaking pretty bad. The dealership wouldn't give me a rental car because the book time was only .6 tenths of an hour. So, it's inexpensive to have fixed. I believe they told me it would have been about $90.00 (parts and labor) if I had paid for it myself.

I think they all leak after the seal gets old and then it hardens and contracts whether it splits or not. Mine is a 1999 with 33,000 miles. It never leaked until two months ago. Once I had it replaced, it doesn't leak anymore. It's like any semi-pliable material, it deteriorates and will eventually leak.

i ran a serch and found this topic which is about a week old. i got an extreme chassis 8.8 2 months ago, and i checked under the car to see if it was leaking... gee wiz, it was!!! wow, what a suprise. (some of you know the **** we had to go throught just to GET the damn rear ends.) so its leaking in the same spot this guys stocker is. up by where the driveshaft meets the rear end. so do you guys think it might be more than just a bad seal? anyone think there could be a bigger issue? thanks for any help.
