Why not piece together a 9 inch for less money?
I was just wondering, why don't more people buy the components from Strange and Moser for a 9 inch and have it installed by professional? I think it would cost less than a package anyway. Please correct me if I am wrong, or if I am missing something:
Moser Bolt-In housing and axle package for F-bodies with Torque Arm Bracket, including housing, bracket, axles (up to 35 spline, wheel bearings, wheel studs, and retainer plates)
$920
Strange Ford 9 Inch 31 spline Detroit Soft Locker
$420
Strange Pro Street Gear Sets (4.11)
$170
Used center section/third member from a junkyard
??? Cheap?
Reuse all the reluctor rings, backing plates, etc.
$0
Total: $1510 plus whatever the center section costs
What am I missing here?
Unless I am REALLY missing something, I don't see why people don't do this. I mean, it is like $800 cheaper than the Billingsley setup, which is a GREAT price compared to some.
Also, I was wondering...I have heard complaints about the way the Torque arm mounts to Moser 12 bolts, and that the Strange 12 bolt bracket for TA's is much better. Is the Moser 9 inch bad like their 12 bolt? Just asking, because Strange doesn't offer a bolt in housing.
Can someone fill me in? Sorry if I'm clueless, but I just was thinking, as much as people complain about them not being setup right and the cost, why don't they go this route?

I think some of it might be what you'd pay in labor to a shop then. Because having to assembly everything...you're going to pay more for labor than if they can just bolt the rear right in. Not to mention...you have to have a shop local to you that you trust to set up the gears.

ease of install...maybe...the fact thata you dont have to go to 3 places to get it done..plus its all new...i dont konw...all i know is thaat my 12 bolt whines like a bitch...and if i were to do this all over again..i would of jus rebuilt my 10 bolt. the whine..and cash simply were not worth it tome

I picked to build mine peice by peice so that I chose what part went into the rear and how the rear was setup. The money I save on doing it myself allowed me to buy better parts
12 bolt housing and axles - 1099 from Tbyrne
spool - 189 or dif - 405
Rear end girdle cover LPW -138
CM 1350 yoke -141
Gears 4.30's - 179
install kit 90.00
solid pinion collar 26.00
oil 5.00
So you save about 200-400.00 doing it yourself.
if you get the rear GP for 2189 this comes with the standard cover, steel yoke and the eaton posi
2489 normal price and it includes the same parts as the GP price

btw. I have had a Moser 9" installed in my car for the last 2 years. It's still rock solid and relatively quiet.

set up labor, 250-300
Master bearing kit, not including wheel bearings or seals- 100
wheel bearings and seals- 40-50
Yolk- varies 35-90
adapter u-joint- 25-ish
And, the 3rd member you would get from a junk yard would only be good for up to 31 spline axles(some only accept 28), so you would be out of luck for a 33, 35 or 40 spline. Also, the aftermarket 3rd members and pinion supports take larger bearings than the OEM ones, which makes a big strength difference. The new 3rd member and pinion supports can be around $400-500, give or take. All in all, you would be better off buying the assmembly. Plus, that doesnt account for the extra freight of multiple shipments.

Thanks, that was what I was looking for. I guess it is better just to buy the assembly.

I'm running a Moser housing and their 31 spline axles. I bought a used center section with an Auburn posi for $500. I ended up replacing the posi a year later with a 31 spline soft locker. That was over $400. It was a rebuidable posi but it had been redone before.
You can get a 31 spline truck center for like $100 if you look, so it's possible to go cheap but like folks have posted you have to buy some additional stuff.

remember too...3rd members from junkyards are usually cast iron and fairly weak.
Upgrade to a nodular iron center (there are some fords out there but its relatively hard to come by) or a strange unit
The 9" in my car was ordered thru a mail order shop that used a moser housing/axles and all strange internals...
I got mine for $2000 back in the day
