Spools are no fun for daily drivers, stay away if you can. The 9" and rwhp loss argument has been going on forever. Some say 3rwhp, some say 30. I think I lost about 20 at the wheels, but that was going from 3.73 10bolt to 4.30 9".

Good luck with whatever you decide.

My opinion? They're fine for the street unless you drive like a moron. But some have opposing feelings. I wouldn't bother with opinions here...Find a local with a spool that'll let you take a cruise with him, and conjure up your own opinion. Just a suggestion, FWIW...

They do eat tires though, that's for sure.

i run 4.71 geared 9" and a full spool.

i drove my car everywhere this year with no problems..even on my 17" street rims with drag radials it was fine, never knew it was there unless i was making slow, tight turns..like turning around in my driveway or soemthing..then it would clunk and bang some.

oh. as for loss on the dyno..no idea, but its gotta be somewhat signficant..but remember you will gain some of it back going to a spool over a locker..spool is a good bit lighter in rotating mass..

I drove a spool on the street for over a year before the car became full race duty. They arent that bad as long as you drive like you have a spool in the rear. Tires will wear out about twice as fast since you are dragging one whenever you turn. I suggest running the tallest sidewall you can if you are running a spool. I ran a 26" and a 28" and it was a world of difference between the 2, the 28 wouldnt hop near as bad as the 26 would.

If you are that concerned about it, go with a locker instead of the spool. The lockers for the 9" do not have the problem of breaking spider gears like the posi's due in the 12 bolts. That way you will have spool traction in a straight line, and posi (or limited slip type) performance cornering. As far as how much HP is lost... I have heard from 3 different sources now that it is about 3% (one of these was Strange). It is not just the weight that causes it. The pinion gear intersects the ring gear 2 1/2" below the center on the 9" compared to 1 1/2" below the center on the 12 bolt. This difference eats up more HP (but is supposedly stronger as well). I decided to go ahead and go with the 9" since I have a 6 speed, if I had an auto, I would have taken the 12 bolt for sure. Of course after the fact I found out that Strange makes a drop out 12 bolt 3rd member, that will bolt into a 9" housing. That would be cool.

thanks for the replays guys.

BOWTIE. im jsut asking as the 9in i found has a spool in it all ready and for the price cant pass it up. all so has 35 splin gun drilled axles. i all so want to go with 9in cause i have a M6. dont wana worrie about busting rear no more been there 4 alone in 2004.
and i know ill lose some on the dyno but not too worried about it as ill be able to run tires that will put my power down and not have ot worry about it leaveing my on the line. there for i should be faster lol.

I have run a locker in my nine inch. It was not a "soft" locker. It was a pain in the *** on the street.
I stepped up to a spool and 35spline axles and the car is Much more streetable. If you run a drag radial or any other soft compond tire on the street then they will not last long at all.
