Default Shock 10 Bolt Does Call For Synthetic Axle Lubricant

I read my owner's manual today and it does say to use synthetic axle lube. GM part no. 12378261 or equivalent meeting GM Specification 9986115. I bought some Mobli 1 synthetic 75w-90 today and plan to change fluid tomorrow. And I did get some GM additive.

I might be mistaken, but if you have the Zexel/Torsen type rear end, I do not think you need the additive. It is my understanding that all that is is a friction modifier designed to keep the clutches in clutch type differentials from chattering (basically allows them to slip more).

Many, including me, prefer conventional petroleum based gear oil. I really believe the 7.5 rears hold up a little better and surely run quieter w/it, although it may cost a horsepower, or 2. Just my opinion, though....WJ

I would rather use a good GL5 dinosaur oil. Nothing against Mobil1, just see more problems in the ones running synthetic.

The additive is not needed in the Torsen posi. No clutches means no additive needed. I run the Royal Purple Max gear lube in my rear. Does ok for me.
