Differences between 2.73 and 3.73's?
I am going to change my gears from 2.73's to 3.73's. I will also be keeping the 2 series carrier. The gears I will be installing ar Richmond Gears. I have a stock A4 with an LS1. Can some please spell out the positives and negative from going from 2.73's to 3.73? I want to know stuff like HP and TQ and gas, and etc? Thanks

Well assuming you still have the stock torque converter - you will see a gain of 2-3 tenths or so. You will lose about 6-7 mpg on the highway. City milage may go down a tad. This will not really change your HP. If you still have the stock torque converter I recommend upgrading that before the gears. You will see (and feel) a bigger gain and still maintain your highway gas mileage.

If you can get it to hook, I would expect more around .5, and would not expect that drastic a mpg drop, depending on what kind of mileage you are getting now. You would probably give up about 3-4 mpg hoghway, and similar in city driving. With the torque converter locked up and in od on the highway the gear change isnt as drastic. It will be more responsive at almost any speed. Traction will be an issue, so be prepared.

As for the speed increase - I was just giving an average based on posts I have read in the past.
As for the gas milage - I upgraded less drastically - 2:73 to 3:42's and I lost 4-5 mpg myself so I assume it will just be worse.

You'll like the gears. Part throttle acceleration will require less throttle input and the dead spots will be reduced. The car will feel more torquey. Also if/when you go to an aftermarket stall the loose feeling at part throttle will be reduced since you have more gear. The only negative to 3.73's I can think of besides gas mileage is that you wont be able to recover second gear at highway speeds so the 60 MPH full throttle runs wont feel as explosive because the car will likely downshift to third and not second gear.

I went from 2.73's to GM 3.42's to GM 4.10's. I like the 4.10's the best. Alot of people say it is to big for an A4. As far as the gas it is not that bad. On the highway its alittle different. It is at 2800-3000 at 65mph.
P.S. I have a HPPIII if you need one.

But the fun factor alone was worth it
