Making my 10 bolt last?
Is there anyway to strengthen my 10 bolt to last me until I can afford to upgrade? I have SFC's and girdle but on my college budget the new rear will have to wait til summer. Any suggestions? thanks

don't drive it? there are companies out there that claim they make parts strong enough for 500hp, but i wouldn't buy into it, i've broken both auburn and eaton posi's that were supposed to hold the power, my customers have broken aftermarket axles, save your money for the rear.

To be honest, there are only a few things I would do. If you have your own welder weld your axle tubes all the way around the housing vs they are spot welded now. If you want, you can install a $35 crush sleeve eliminator. Other than that have a holy man bless it and if you have major mods planned save up for a 12 bolt or 9 inch

Would you guys recommend a 9 inch or 12 bolt? The car is A4 with big stall. I figured there wasn't much to do to the stocker, I guess I have been lucky with it up to this point considering I'm running low 11's.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I did beef it up and I kept the bullet proof GM 3.23 gears. 1.4 60 fts in my A4 with multiple high 10 second passes and it's solid as a rock. Wheel hop is the killer and putting 4.10s in a 10 bolt is a "pancake" mistake.
A 12 bolt would be stronger no doubt, but if you don't have $2500.00 to dump, then buy some time like I did. It is an option. Maybe not the best, but still an option.
Mike Pabone (aka 1 BAD Z) pulled i think high 1.3x 60 fts with his beefed up 10 bolt.
That's my .02

I installed an Eaton clutch type posi, Aluminum TA cover stud girdle kit, welded the axle tubes for strength, kept the bullet proof GM 3.23 gears and installed a solid pinion spacer/crush sleeve.
The Torsen and Auburn are the weakest link unless you have 3.73/4.10 gears then the gears are. The balance of things I did were primarily for additional strength and suppport. Running high 10s and 1.4 60 fts proves it's effectiveness. It can be broke, but I haven't found its limit with my 400-420 rwhp car.
If you have the $$$ , by all means get a 12 bolt or 9 Inch, but I didn't at the time and I have no regrets.
Larry is running faster than I am and he's got a similiar set up.
The 10 bolt is quiet and faster. Just don't exceed it's limits and make sure you eliminate wheel hop. It's the

yeah.....don't beat on it.....
if you put a good set of gears and a girdle on it will be able to take standard street tires (the tires will let loose before the rearend) but nothing too sticky....traction is the killer of 10 bolts......
I'm still running around on my beefed up 10 bolt but I have Drag radials and stiff springs/shocks....if I put much power in it at all (off the line) I spin so I'm good.....once I get up to around 45-50 I can do whatever I want......

The higher ratios can kill them pretty easy. The pinions are smaller, and they multiply more torque. A 3.23 would last longer than a 3.73 or 4.10.
You could alwasy put a real lazy cam in it and run a real small tire. That way your are making lesspower and the tires are the weak point.
