Question Cleaning Out Housing

I am changing the oil in a 12-bolt this weekend (first time for these gears).

I am sure that I read somewhere that you can use brake parts cleaner to help get all the old oil out.
Is this really a good idea?

Anyone have any other tips on getting as much old oil and shavings out as possible?
If I am going to the trouble of taking the cover off, I want to make the most of it.

just wash down the gear and do not get any into the pinion bearings. You don't want to leave any in the pinion bearing pocket and break down the new oil. Also try to get non-chlorinated brake clean.
