Default thinking of a gear swap

I know everyone says that gears don't amount to a big performance gain, but are there any exceptions? I have a completely stock 2003 LS6 crate engine in my car (405 hp) with 2.73's and a 3000 stall converter. My 60' times have ranged from the 2 sec. range to a best of 1.818. I ran 2 sessions at E-Town on the 19th and my 60's were 1.877, 1.877, 1.882, 1.818, 2.021, 1.861 and 1.866. More gear has got to help me! Obviously I am at my limit on the short times, I know more stall would help, but that's not an option right now. I'm thinking a bit more gear would shave a tenth or two off the short times which I should pick up plus on the top end. After all, the LS6's sweet spot is higher in the RPM range than the LS1. I'm coming through the traps at about 4800 RPM (according to HPTuners log) at about 108-109 MPH. Is a gear change worth it?

Gear changes are a lot of money I think it comes up to about 600 bucks if I am not mistaken if you cannot do it yourself. My honest opinion would be to try to find an axle assembly for sale with the ratio you want then just swap them out and sell yours. As far as performance I would definately see it worth it to go to a 3.73 perhaps. It will help you out quite abit.

Thanks guys! I was kinda expecting to hear stuff like it's not worth it or don't do it, but I do feel it should help me out a bit, just needed a little reinforcement. I do have all of the tools required to do the job and have done it before, so that should keep the cost down. The only thing I'm a little worried about is spending the $600 or so and then breaking everything I just paid for. I know A4 cars are a little more forgiving than the M6, but the 7 1/2" 10 bolt really does suck and $1800-2100 for a 12 bolt is not an option. What's a guy to do?

As far as power goes, I don't plan on doing to much more modding. I'm not sure of actual #'s, but mathimatically power works out to be around 370 RWHP. What do you think?
