Arrow M6 guys with surviving 12-bolts inside!

With all the threads I've read about M6 guys breaking 12-bolts, I thought it would be a good idea to see who hasn't broken one. I'm talking about 12-bolts with posi's in them. For those that have a 12-bolt that have taken a beating, speak up. What brand 12-bolt, what mods done, what tires are you running, what rpm are you launching at (dumping/slipping), and what gears are in the rear. Type of clutch would be nice also. I'm thinking this could help us guys who want to make our 12-bolt last.

Im still on the suprising 10 bolt. Once upon a time I was dead set on a 12 bolt. Now I am going with a 9 inch so I wont have to worry. I am curious as well

I been running a Moser 12-bolt with 285/40-17 GS-D3's and I have the 33 spline axles with the heavy duty Eaton posi unit. No problems yet and I have tortured it some but not real hard as of yet. Not much gear noise so far either(3.73 gears). I think my 10-bolt would not have survived what the 12-bolt has already with the new tires. I like hitting the throttle in 1st at about 10 mph. Sets ya right back in the seat. My old tires on the 10-bolt would just light up. I do notice the inside tire hopping when I throttle it hard in a tight corner with the heavy duty posi unit. I believe they installed 800 lb. springs in the posi unit. I know that it grabs posi no matter what direction I am turning or how hard I throttle it. Quite fun actually

Just get a spool and you'll never have to worry about your rear EVER again.
And before everyone jumps on the "you can't daily drive a spool" band wagon. its not that bad and sometimes i forget i have a spool. and i don';t have power steering so its a little harder to turn in my car.

That sounds like a decent amount of abuse yours has put up with Technoman. Anyone else have some input?

i now had to switch to a TH350 cause the M6 was the one that could no longer survive.

Mine is doing fine, for over 3 years now. I have 33 spline axles, 4.11's, and the Eaton HD posi. I never put friction modifier in it, so the rear end howls at me on tight turns But I'll be damned if it slips. If I'm touching the throttle at all around a turn, the inside tire skips It's survived what the 10 bolt hasn't, even though I've not gone very fast (7.4's in the 1/8th at 96 MPH, 3720lb. race weight). It doesn't seem to mind my 5500 RPM dumps on ET Streets with a SPEC 4 clutch.

There has been tons of people who have shattered their 12 bolts, most of them with M6's because of shock to the drivetrain. A 12 bolt is a good upgrade but doesnt seem to be the final answer in some cases.

I broke my 12 bolt Mosor spider gears with 315/35/17 Nittio's with a 3,500 launch.
I don't thing the short side wall helped.
There has been a lot of broken 12 bolt spider gears with m6.
I'll be putting a spool it soon!

Thanks for the input guys! This is what I'm hoping people are putting their 12-bolts through and we just don't hear about them posting about it because nothing breaks.

So what you are saying is that if you dont mind driving around w/o powersteering you wont mind a spool?

What scares me away from a spool is that it seems like it would be hard on the chassis.

Pretty much. the tires make a little bit of noise when your parking or making tight turns, they don't last as long(my skinneies are 30 bucks a piece and my rear street tires are $50 a piece, so i don't mind buying a new set every year), it is not hard on anything on your chassis. the tire will skip (and release the tension) WAY before there is any strain put on any rear end or suspensiion component.
your car will want to keep going straight when you turn the wheel but its only noticable at low speeds (like 20 and under). if you keep your power steering you'll probably never notice anything other than the slight ytire noise.

Spool sound tempting. Light, cheap, and strong. Plus you can get them with 35 spline axles

I was going to get HUGE axles too but then i read Moser web site.

Should you be concerned about breaking an axle?

To achieve maximum performance you should use the smallest axle available that will safely handle the torque your car produces.

The torque rating of Moser Engineering Custom Alloy Axles are as follows:

30 Spline - 6,200 ft. lbs. (per axle)
31 spline - 7,000 ft. lbs. (per axle)
33 spline - 8,200 ft. lbs. (per axle)
35 spline - 9,600 ft. lbs. (per axle)
40 spline - 12,000 ft. lbs. (per axle)

Which axle size is right for me?
The way to pick your axles is so one axle will handle all of the maximum torque your car can produce. That way it is practically impossible to break an axle because you have at least a 200% safety factor.

So with an M6 car with 4.10's it would take 631 ft lbs of torque to break ONE 30 spline axle.

My Boyfriend broke his Posi twice, twisted the splines on 2 30 spline axles and most recently snapped an axle on drag radials of all things.

He launches around 6K on a QTP slick. Needless to say he's got a spool in there now. Funny to hear his car slowing down turning it sounds like eek,eek eek My 12 bolt is just fine, but it's only been on drag radials.

My 12 bolt is about 2 and half y/o. 33 Spline axles, 3.73's, Eaton Pro-posi, ABS, TCS and Girdle. I run Nitto DR's (315's) on the street and 27"x10.5" ET Streets at the track. I launch(dumping the clutch) around 4000-5000rpms at the track. My gears whine a lot and my pinion leaks. I have no complaints about my 12 bolt. Mods in sig.

i drag about 2 times a year and my 30 spline axles are bent slightly in the splines. but i'm still using them. the 30's are not warrantied, bu thte 33's are. so if you are gonna abuse your moser, get the 33 splines for the warranty.

I've had my 12 bolt for almost a year... Eaton HD posi, 33 spline, 4.11 gears. Still doing fine... I launch at over 5k rpms on ET Streets.
