Default Could a stock rear housing be modified to use 8.5'' internals?

Have been doing a little research, and was wondering if it would be possibly to modify the stock 7.5'' 10 bolt housing to fit the larger 8.5'' internals?

I found these specs:

Rear End Style GM 8.5 in.

Ring Gear Diameter 8.50 in.

Pinion Shaft Diameter 1.626 in.

7.5:

Ring Gear Diameter 7.50 in.

Pinion Shaft Diameter 1.438 in.

Was thinking if the posi unit and ring gear would fit, it might be possible to machine the pinion shaft opening to accomidate the later 1.626 shaft.

Anyone know?

The main thing that would hold you up would be the width of the case, the length of the new pinion, and all the bearing sizes. It wont fit. The better idea would be to try to fit 7.6 axle tubes into an 8.5 and fab up a torque arm bracket. It would have to be 4 channel because the 8.5 reluctor ring mounts different on most applications.
