I had a Moser 12-bolt, just switched to a 9". My biggest gripe was that I couldn't run a spool w/ a 3-series carrier. No problems w/ a 35-spline 9" running 3.50s and a spool. 9" will hold a lot more power and can be lightened quite a bit (aluminum center section, lightened gears, drilled and star flanged axles, etc).
There's always Billingsley's 9" setup which is light as hell.

With a M6 a 9" with Detroit Soft Locker is bullet proof. I have no problem dumping the clutch at 4,000 rpm's with Mickey Thomson Drag Radials. If you have a strip only car think spool.
