gears?
What exactly do 4.11 gears do or even better what do different gears do? Call me a newb, or an idiot I don't care I just want to know. and I know the search won't find "purpose of gears".
Thanx for your patience.

it makes the vehicle accelerate quicker. it also cuts the top speed down. think like a 10 speed bike. it's real easy to start off in 1st gear (4.10) but real hard to try and start peddling from a dead stop in 10th gear (2.73) and the reverse. you peddle you butt off in 1st and don't go very fast. in 10th, you don't peddle near as much and go lots faster. it's a balance of what gear is best for your application. currently i'm running 4.10 gears. i had 3.23. with the 3.23 i had a best of 1.85 ish 60ft. with the 4.10, my best is 1.709 so far.

Youll definitley see a 1/4 e.t. and mph gain. My 4.10s alone got me .3 tenths and 3 mph.If you have an A4 you wanna put a stall in with the gear. Together theyll give you a full second in the 1/4. I have 4.10s in my daily driver. I love'em. If you drive on the interstate a lot then you want 3.73s. But in the city 4.10s are actually better on gas then the factory 3.23 gear. Is your car a A4 or M6? This makes a big difference when choosing which gear to go with. As far as the "purpose" of gears. Basically the higher the number, the more acceleration it'll have. The lower the number, the more top end it'll have. But the "smaller" the gear the higher number (like 4.10) The "taller" the gear the lower the number.(like 3.23) I sometimes over-explain myself! lol
Hope i was of help.

With a M6 get the 4.10s. when I said 3.73s above for highway use i meant for an A4. Dont worry about top end. I have an A4 with 4.10s and ive still hit 155mph a number of times. At 155mph it was running about 5600rpms,if i recall correctly. And OD is good to 6500rpm. I still had almost 1000rpms left! So theres still plenty of top end to go around. Plus youre in a M6 so you should have more top end anyway.

When I was deciding on gears I used this site to help determine where my new shift points would be and such:

all right one more thing, thanx for the info by the way, with 4.10 gears that means i'll be hitting 50+ mph on first gear or less? I know 1st gear hits 50 on stock cars

1st gear should be way done before 50mph. I would say 38mph to 40mph as S346K stated. He was also running 6200rpms and taller tires which make the axle ratio taller. So probably would be done at 35mph with the 6000rpm redline.
