Default Daily driven 4.56 gear

I will be switching to a T56 in the up coming weeks, and will be investing in a Moser 9" with a Detroit Locker. i would like to go with a 4.56 gear, and I was just wondering how they are on the street. The car is not a daily driver, and would rarely see the expressway(only on the way to the track),it would maybe get 2500 miles a year>Thanks for any info .

Well, I'd guess it'll be too much to tolerate unless you're running bigger tires. On street tires, 4.10, maybe 4.30 is about as low as most people want to go.

On the street you can use 2nd gear to start-out and you'll find that you use 6th gear more than the average guy. On the highway, rpms will be less than if you had 3.73s in your A4.

I drove mine 45 miles to work this morning, 30 miles on the freeway, with stock 17" rims and nittos. I can't say "daily driver" because I store it in the winter, but I drive it a lot during the warm season. You'll be fine, if 456 is what you need for the track, go for it!

Im thinking of going from 4.10's to 4.56's when I get my aftermarket rear. I cruise at 70mph, @ 1900 rpm in 6th. Im guessing 4.33's or 4.56's wouldnt be too much worse. I'm sure the acceleration would be very extreme.

I have not tryed any that low , in quite a while, BUT in the mid '60 our family car was a 67 mustang/427/ 9" detroit locker/4.88' turn 127mph in 1/4 , gas milage on pump was
4 1/2-5 mpg ( wish I still had it inspite on 2.50-2.75 per gal)
we had a ball with it on street for 5-6 years, pulled in high like most cars pull in 1 & 2 nd , going to install 4.88' in my son's 67 chey nova next week, but he only drives it to work (50 miles ) once a wk
good luck and have fun with your's

You'll be fine with a 4.56 gear. Just driving around it didn't feel much different than the stock gear to me. RPMs are a little higher, but nothing major considering you have two over drive gears to choose from. I'm surprised more people don't run them.

Good luck!

Chad
