broke a torque arm bolt in a moser 12-bolt
I was attaching the TA to my new moser 12bolt, using the supplied 1/2 in grade 8 bolts( the 4 bolt design sucks) and the bottom rear bolthead snapped off under light hand pressure on a 1/2in drive ratchet. I would think a grade 8 bolt wpuld be stronger than that. I now have my TA stuck on the rearend as the stub of the bolt is catching on it. I put a call in to speed inc.(vendor purchased from) and they are contacting moser. I also contacted a automotive machine shop and they said they can fix it by putting the rear in a bridgport and machining out the bolt and retapping the hole. they said not to even try a easyout as it will only make things worse. Also drilling a grade 8 bolt is not an easy thing to do. So basically I am screwed. Needless to say I am pissed.

If it snapped off under light hand pressure it isn't in that tight then right ? You might try to get it out with a punch and a hammer - at the edge of the bolt drive it down and in the counterclockwise direction - has worked for me occasionally. Use lots of wd-40 too to get it to slip.

Since it's at least relatively accessible, you could go at it
with a reverse drill bit (cobalt preferably) if you trust your
hand to push a straight bore. Cheap easy-outs are a hurt
waiting to happen, a good one could do the job, but the
reverse drill bit may just do the job for you.

As has already been mentioned, use a punch and hammer to back it out. I've done it many times in different situations, and with the head of the bolt broken off, there shouldn't be any stress on the remaining bolt threads. Bob

Mine did the exact same thing, accept it was on the top side of the punkin, I used vicegrips then i drilled a hole through the of the threads, put a screw driver in and backed it out. Also just a suggestion, use red lock tight on those bolts, the mosers have a tendency to have them back out for some retarded reason. I torque mine down at 110 ftpounds plus the red lock. THEY AINT COMMIN OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I got the rearend back from the machine shop. He said the bolt was not a gradee 8 but it was marked as one, he was shaving off metal with a cheap chisel trying to back the stub out. the stub was comming apart but not comming out. I have to leave it, he had got it in the bridgeport and drilled out center of the stub, and hoped that would release it. did not work, They had to drill it out completely and heli-coil the hole. He said it looked like the hole was tapped incorrectly, the hole was slightly tapered so the bolt locked itself inplace and then snapped because it was junk.
With the rear back, and 4 new high quality grade 8 bolts the rear went in smoothly.
