Default old 9" or 12 bolt Will they fit?

I hear a lot of talk about the ford 9" rearend and twelve bolts. I was just wondering if any one has tried to fit an old ford 9" or an older GM 12 bolt to the third gen f Body. These things are easy to find and cheap enough, just wanted to know if that's a possibility.

Would the stock rear hold up if I get a girdle, new spindles, and weld gussets to the pinion support?

older 12-bolts and 9" rearends do not have the proper mounting brackets for the lower control arms, and do not have the mounting areas for the torque arm.

you could modify a stock rear end to make it work but it would be difficult and take a lot of time. I think the easiest most economical way to get a nice rear is to buy a complete 9 inch housing, torque arm, and 31 spline axles from a vendor which runs about $950 shipped. Then just go buy you a used factory ford center section with a 31 spline posi, and the gears you want. They can be had on ebay for $150-300. I've seen 3.50, 31 spline posi rears on ebay for $150 buy it now. Then just slap it in.
