Default 99T/A 2.73 gear

I am looking at this used (at a dealer) 46,000 mile convertible 99 LS1 auto with posi and 2.73 gears. Will this car be a dog? Is it worth 12 grand? Will it get 20 mpg+ with those gears?

yes, it will be a dog, yes you will definitely get 20+ mpg with those gears (closer to 30 mpg with extended highway use in OD) and as far as the price goes...i have no idea.

It will be alittle slugish with the convert wieght and 2.73 combo. Sounds like a good price though and it will deffinatly get good gas mileage. Even with my mods I'm knocking down well over 25 mpg on the highway and about 20mpg under normal around town driving.

My car came with 2.73's and I got 30 mpg on the highway. I ran a 13.98 second quarter mile with the granny gears and it was my first time drag racing. Later on, I installed a Yank TT3000/3.0 Torque Converter and Nitto 555R Drag Radials. I ran a 13.00 second quarter mile time. I would say $12K is a little too high. So, you can make it faster and still get 25-30 mpg. Just don't race M6's, they will bitch slap you.

The 20's are killing you. The weight difference being the most prevalent. Also, you are raising the gear ratio and you are using more gas to get to the same speed.

18's would be better since they weigh less. Do you know what width and profile you would buy? If you bought 295/35ZR18's, that would be a tire height of 26.1" and stock is 25.6". That would effectively change the gearing from a 2.73 to a 2.68. What are the tires sizes on your 20's?

they have extremely low profiles on them and i think there only 26.5 and there either 8.5 or 9.5 wide so what would that equal out to???

If the tires are 26.5", the effective gear ratio is 2.63 and the tires/wheels are heavier. All can contribute to lower mileage.

i have 285/30zr18 and 18x9.5 chrome z06 in the front and 18x10.5 rear with 295/30zr18

height is 25.2 on the front and 25.4 on the rear (the one that matters)

I get about 22mpg on average.....Thats city/highway/racing and all.....I just divide miles by gallons and reset the ODO when i fill up.

BTW thats a 2.73 geared 01 camaro with Lid, Loudmouth, 85mm MAF, and tuning. The car should run about a 12.80 in the 1/4 mile because with BAD traction in a 1000ft track here in arkansas it has been 11.0 @ 100 with a 2.1 60ft time.

Nothing wrong with 2.73s, love the gas mileage 20-22 town hwy28-30. stock the car ran 13.72@102. Lid,Hpp3, ran 1/8 8.65 @83 on radial street tires. With 3.23 it only ran 8.58@84. I also installed a ATR Pitbull exhaust and changed the Hpp3 settings it feels faster but have not raced it since the install. Oh i put the 2.73 rear back in it again. I like being able to control the wheel spin on the street.
