2.73 to 3.42 - do I need a different carrier?
I was considering a 2.73 to 3.42 (ev. 3.73) swap.
Do I need a different carrier?
I saw somewhere the 2.73 has a series 2 carrier, from the 3.42 and up it needs a series 3 carrier...
Is it true?
If yes what else do I need in addition to pinion + ring + carrier? (ok, an installation kit...) but will the casing fit the series 3 carrier?
Thank you - Stefano

yeah I agree but my problem is I had bought an axle that came out offa 2.73 carrier and I have a 3.42 rear (posi that is stock) but the axle out of the 2.73 is different by the splines it tapers bigger. And what is the difference between the 7.5 rear and the 7.625 rear? Sorry man didnt mean to bud into your post but in a way its kinda similar problems.
Thanks Nick

A 2.73 to 3.42/3.73 swap requires either a different carrier, or purchasing a "XGear" or "ThickGear" set. Your housing should handle a 2 or 3 series carrier and/or gears just fine.

First off, ring gear spacers suck. Good idea, but poor execution.......
I would go with the thick gearset myself. There are no 'con's to running a thick gearset, except for a slight increase in weight (something you'll never notice). They ae no meaker, no more difficult to adjust and cost the same as a standard set.
And Nick, that would be 0.125".

Also you should still have a 7.5" rear end, all Fourth Gen F-Bodies came with a 7.5" 10-Bolt as far as I know.
Unless someone proves me wrong, TCS has nothing to do with gear sets or differential sizes. TCS equiped LS1's have a 4 channel ABS system, whereas non-TCS LS1's have a 3 channel ABS setup.
"Channels" and "carriers" are totally different things.
The only difference in axle lengths I know of is between 3rd gens, and 4th gens, so I don't know why your axles would be different lengths. As for splines, or teeth tapers, I can't help you there. I've never replaced an axle. I know there's a reticulator ring difference on TCS equipped cars, but I dont' think that woudl affect the teeth. You might want to start your own thread with a good title so people can post up and help you. Try something like "Are Axle lengths different?"
