Clunking rear
My car has had a clunking sound coming from the rear end ever since i've owned the car when coasting and turning at parking lot speeds. Its gotten progressively worse over the years. However I recently noticed that when I push my car backwards (ignition off, car not running, just literally push it back by foot) it clunks the same way doing this.
I'm not real up-to-par on the inner workings of the rearend/axle ... but was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on what it might be.
TIA

well the rear end oil has been changed once already .... I mean it COULD be on its last legs ... but it's been doing it since I took ownership of the car (w/ 11,000mi on it) ... but has gotten progressively worse.

i don't think it's the LCA's... why would the clunk after i roll the car backwards maybe 6"s without the engine off?
I mean i'm willin to give it a shot and throw the stock ones back in to see if the sound goes away or not, but would the LCA's make noise even when the car is only moving VERY slowly?
If its the ring and pinion ... whats the cure for that? just a new set of gears? or what.

I was just reading the local newspaper this morning and there is an artical in the "Wheels" section that says "GM cars and trucks suffer from "driveline lash", that results from excessive slop in the differential, between the ring and pinoin gears. The main sympton is a clanging sound when going from drive to reverse when the vehicle is stationary."
My stock 3.23 rearend did this, and when I upgraded to 3.73's I had an independant rearend shop do the swap, the problem went away.
I hope this helps you out in some way.

Hmmm, guess i'll start small and go big.
I'll swap out the LCA's this weekend and see if it goes away, and while i'm swapping it out i'll check the Ujoints ... .see if i can see any visual wear on them. If not ... guess I might be getting gears next lol.

Well I swapped out the LCA's back to stock. That didn't cure the clunking, I didn't expect it to really.
If the Ujoints are worn, will there be any visual sign of the wear or would you have to disassemble it all to inspect it? I guess come Xmas break I'll drain my rear and pop off the cover to check and see how everything looks in there.
