Nascar Rear ends
I was watching today's NEXTEL CUP race and was wondering- What type of Rear end do NEXTEL CUP and BUSCH Series stock cars use? Anyone know?

9 inch Ford floater, with an internal pump for gear lube that housing shown there in the picture is prob made by Tex Racing, the only thing holding it in is the left side truck arm. My 9 inch is old parts from our trucks... we dont put many miles on things so it shall live on under my Firebird.... And if your good you can change gears in a 9 inch in about the same ammount of time as you can with a quick change... I got 6 minutes to get'er done..

I'd like to see someone change gears in a ford 9inch as quick as I can in a quick change.
Fresh off the track, I changed the gears in my cousins dirt track car in less than 2 minutes. 12 bolts nuts all the way around the cover, pull the cover, pull the two gears(they slide off, no extra bolts), not ring and pinion, cog style, put two new gears in.... put cover back on, refill with fluid. Quick Change rear ends make it easy.... its even hard to put the gears in the wrong way..... the only thing I think you really can mess up is not putting in fluid in, or not tightening the rear end cover up enough.

i think they are all spools. you use tire size, from left to right, to make the car turn in the center of the corner. a.k.a. "stagger". if you have a bigger right side tire it will make the car want to turn left. heres a picture of a 9in with spool and 6:20 gear out of our late model. picture may or may not work.

They are not all spools, most are lockers, billet steel lockers to be exact. depending ont he track they run on, they run spools, or lockers. They are all 31 spline, and depending on nextel or busch series, they are nodular 9+ iron or regular housing.
There are companies in N.C. that sell used nascar setups. That's where i got my 3rd member. Mine is a nodular iron 3rd member, with polished 4.22 gears, and a billet steel locker out of a nextel cup car. The yokes have an integrated pulley on them for the cooling system. Pretty neat little system.

Any of the 3 top series Craftsman Truck BGN or NNC must run a 31 spline steel locker on all tracks ( used to run open diff's at plate tracks not sure if its legal anymore).. Spools limited slips or torque sensative diff not permitted... Many late model classes do not allow the use of lockers or diff's such as "Gleason" Diamond track which can act as traction control, these are measures to keep costs down..
