seems like every picture of a rear end in an f-body has those two bolts in front of the rear end covered in oil/grease (including my own). can someone shed some light on this? is the vent tube near there?

If the axle tube has not moved any yet it won't take any special tools. He's a ******* dumb ***, take it to a different dealership. If you don't have the cash just go to your local exhaust shop and have them run a bead around both axle tubes.

It is if they went to Goodwill and hired "special needs" people to assemble them. Or was it the engineer? Or was it the accountant? They are F**ing con job thats for sure.
Is the other spot weld in place? Like was said above weld the tubes. Way to go GM! great service!! "your gonna need special tools" ..sheesh what an a**

The hard part'll be getting the axle ready to weld. I'd suggest taking it out(Most labor-intense, but safest) and taking it to a metal shop... someone who knows whut he/she's doing can heat that spot a bit and fill the whole hole up with metal, and while he/she's at it do the other three as well. With a good weld penetration into the tubes, you'll have a time breaking those plugs off, but then again, we're talking about the 7.5" 10-bolt, here.
I know it's a big bite out of the wallet, but I'd suggest a 9".

The housing is gonna need to be welded anyway, weather the diff, gears or whatever is shot.
Only one way to tell, open it up and look yourself or find a place that will do both. A 4x4 place or transmission shop will know what to do.
Seriously, if the axle tube has moved (unlikely) and it is all busted up inside. It's gonna start getting $$$
Best bet go get one from a junkyard.
