Default howling vs. whine?

I'm posting this for a friend. He has a 02 Z28 almost completely stock except for exhaust. For the past 3 or 4 days he has noticed a loud howling / whirring noise coming from the rearend. He said it doesn't really sound like a whine though because it's not high pitched.

Is this the same thing as gear whine or is it something different? Also what is a good price to replace the stock 10-bolt? Could the diff fluid be low?

He is making a recording of the noise. When I get it I'll post it. TIA

I have the sound clip but need somewhere to host it. It is definitely a howl.

Axle bearing could be going bad...Mine started whinning shortly after I bought it and it ended up being a loose pinion nut. Pull the rear cover and maybe your drive shaft and do an inspection... Good luck

When is it making the noise? Acceleration? Deceleration? Constat speed? Turning?

the frequency of the sound changes as the vehicle changes speed independent of engine speed...it gets higher as the car accelerates, and gets lower as the car decelerates, but if he puts it in neutral there is basically no change.

From my experiences, a howling is more of a gear problem than a bearing one. Of course, this might be incorrect, but like I said, based on my experiences, bearings going out make more of a rumbling noise or a wom-wom-wom noise. He needs to take a look inside the differential and check out the gears. If they're fine, do a rebuild and replace all the bearings: pinion, differential, and axle. Could be a good time to bump up his gears. If they're stock, he really should. IMHO.
If he just wants to check the fluid, all he needs to do is take the 3/8" plug off the passenger side of the diff and stick his finger in. If he can feel fluid right below the opening, its good.

My car actually had a howling (like if you were standing outside and heard a train constantly blowing its horn from miles away, kind of like that inside the cabin). The howling would only appear when I would tap the gas, it was really bad on the stock 10 bolt, I bought another 10 bolt with 3:73's and it only does that in 5/6th gear above 50mph I can hear it, but not as bad... it is horrible, you can't hear inside, its like a train is behind you blowing its horn from the distance.

We opened up the old 10 bolt and it looked like the bearings were walking due to a TA diff cover w/ those bearing support bolts... they seemed to have been over tightened... could it also be because of low diff fluid? Do the insides only spin while gas is applied?

I have the same problem with my rear end, i put new 4:10 gears in the factory 10 bolt and since then when im in the gas or about to come to a complete stop it makes a very loud whine. No one can tell me how to make it go away.

FYI the problem was his pinion bearing. he had problems with it while it was under warranty so after some convincing, they're fixing it for free. $1600 repair.

Wow! $1,600 to replace a pinion bearing? Obviously dealership warranty work

The insides spin as long as the wheels are turning, even if your transmission is in neutral, or you are not on the gas.
The train horn noise sounds like probably a problem with the gears as opposed to the bearings, but you'd have to get someone who really knows gears and rear ends. I just know what I've experienced and repaired. Remember, just because the rear end was changed doesn't mean that those gears were installed 100% correctly. I don't think it takes much for these rear ends to make noise. The setup has to be perfect. If the noise isn't something you're willing to live with, either tear into it yourself, or take it to a shop that specializes in rear ends.

My rear has been howling as well lately. I'm hoping it isn't too serious.

When my pinion bearing died it sounded like I had a supercharger strapped to the rear axle. I got mine rebuilt for $560. LS1speed had a special on gears and install kit $239, Ratch solid pinion spacer $17.99, used TA cover bought off this board $75, and labor of $225.
