What is the weak link?

What is the weak link? Generally speaking what is the week link in a stock rear end? Just by a quick search it seems the ring and pinion are the weak link. Dont see many axle shafts breaking. I plan on going to 4:10's. If the weak link is the ring and pinion, wouldnt changing to a aftermarket gear set solve the problem? Its not a lightning quick car, im just running in the high 12's. Thanks guys!

Going to 4.10 will actually make the rear weaker. The higher the ratio the thinner the gears get to accomodate the greater number of teeth making the ring and pinion weaker.
