Am I getting ripped?.....
I just bought a new Moser rear end 12 bolt. The shop that put in in said it was making a noise that was definitely the U Joints. I gave the go ahead and it wasn't the U joints. Then they said it MUST be the driveshaft. I bought a NEW G2 aluminum driveshaft from lmperformance.com (which oddly enough came with new U joints on it) and now they say it is still making a noise. The owner of the shop called me and now said he thinks it could be in the tranny. I blew out the rear when I was whooping on a new GTO, so he said that there might have been so much torque when it blew that it took out the tranny too. Does this sound plausible? I would think it would stop at the driveshaft, and that it wouldn't destroy the whole drivetrain. Anyone?

What rderterman said... Get another opinion. You really need to have someone look at it who knows what the hell they're talking about. I doubt it's your transmission, unless you're making some serious power. And even if it was, as professionals, they should have been able to diagnose that you had a transmission problem instead of a rear end problem.

What does the noise sound like? Have you personnally heard it yourself? Is the car driveable? Get a second and maybe third opinion. I think this shop doesn't know there stuff or is ripping you off big time.

you're getting bent over and ridden hard
if the rear is howling, that's just a moser 12 bolt. the best bet to get rid of that noise is to pull the rear apart and reassemble everything.

i've never done it - tv makes it look easy but we all know how that works
most moser 12 bolt owners had/have a howling rear, my buddy included.
he pulled it apart and reassembled and no problems
check out the gears & axles forum for more info and maybe someone has a howto guide

I don't go to commercial mechanics,99% of the time they overcharge and don't always get it done right. I've had many problems and arguments, and I'm only 19! So now I just use our farm mechanic, he gets the job done right and always listens to ya!!

if its making a noise...could the dumbass not stick his head under there and figure out where its coming from. i mean the tranny is a few feet away from the rear end so he should be able to differentiate where the sound is coming from?

I got the car home. When the car was at his shop it was making a chirping noise that sounded like a goose as the car rolled - in gear or in neutral. He said the car made the same noise when they rolled it with the driveshaft disconnected. This leads me to believe that it is most definitely NOT the tranny. So I drove it home and by the time I got home the noise had decreased by 80%. After a few quick runs around town the rear end hardly makes a noise at all. I get the feeling it was just something that needed to lube up.
The standard for breaking in a new rearend is what? I thought I read somewhere to do five heat cycles, but to make sure you let it cool down in between. And then after that you could get on it, as far as launching and driving fast. Is this necessary or not?
