Default 4.11's - firebird, quick?

Hey ya'all.

got a question here, got a new car, well new to me, old car, '78 firebird.

have rebuilt 350, pretty healthy, but daily driver... looking for a lot more "get-up" - I learned with a prior car I had, swapping the rear-end gears made more of a difference than any engine mod I had ever seen...

so my question is:

how "responsive" around town can this old car be if I go from the 2.73's to 4.11 ????? I'm not looking for top end speed, or even freeway driving, I want "quick" around town, away from lights, etc.

and will I have to go to a 4-speed rather than the auto to lose the slightly "sluggish" feeling, or will the gear swap make it all better?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Awesome body style, congrats on the purchase. Do yourself a favor and get the gears, you'll love it, especially with the tall tires you have. How tall are they?

Most guys with automatics tend to stay with 3.73's but I would go for it. Might need to look into a better torque convertor and a shift kit to get rid of the sluggishness. I've never owned anything but manual trannies in my cars, so not really up on the auto stuff.

Nice car! I would love to have 2nd gen again. I had a 78 12 years ago in highschool. It had a wimpy 305 in it. I put a 3.73 in it and it woke it up a lot. Soon after that I put a 406 w/ 450 HP and 460 TQ at the crank. I really miss that car. I like that body style. I would highly recomend the 3.73 gear, It would absolutely be more responsive around town and you'll have a blast with it. 4.10 may be a bit tall, but for only city driving and at the track it would be ok. Freeway driving would suck w/ 4.10. Just my opinion tough, nevertheless, nice ride.
