I've heard of people having good luck with 10 bolts with an auto tranny. It's mainly the M6 guys that tear um up.. Mine broke on a hard shift on the road. nothing crazy. Street tires too .

If you are going to be running it down the strip everyonce in a while, leaving off the foot brake with the stock converter, you might be ok... Don't rely on it lasting though...

This is just one of those never ending things.
i want to create a sticky called The 10 bold is weird.
because it is
some can handle it some cant its all depending on how your 10 bolt feels at the time lol.
i wouldnt rely on it thought but just dont drive hard untill you can save up for a 9'

this is not an ls1 10 bolt guys. he wants to know about 8.5 10 bolts, i have had very good luck with mine with a lot more power then you launching low 60 foots, i think you might have a probalem with the 2 peice shaft, but you shouldnt have a probalem with the rearend. if you do, there is a lot of companys that make good stuff to make them strong.

terr1bleone,

Thanks for catching the question. I know the stock ls1 Camaro ones aren't gonna live long. From my reading, those were 7.5" (vs 8.5) - a full inch difference.

I'm not so worried about the 2piece DS. Its not expensive to replace with a nice aluminum one or even just a HD one. I spoke to Denny himself at Denny's Driveshaft and told him I'd be putting near 400/400 to the wheels. His honesty paid off (which is probably why I'll buy one from him one day). He told me these two piece DS, though they were not meant for high rpms, are extremely strong and he did not think I'd have an issue.

So understanding the question more clearly now, what do you guys think? Could really use some advice?

thnx

I think the 8.5" especially if you get one of the newer with the larger bearings and the 30 spline axles is more than enough, and can be built for about $1200. Remember the Buick GN's/T-Types and GNX's all had an 8.5" also pretty much everything from GM since the late 60's that did not have a 12 bolt 8.875" or the crappy 7.5"/75/8" got some form of the 10 bolt 8.5. What I am/have doing/done is jacked one out of a late model Silverado '88-'99 (has the 30 spline and larger bearings) narrow it transfer your brackets etc. and have at it, but also remember mine is easier ('03 Blazer Xtreme) no traction control and my abs is in the trans not the rear.

Firefighter,

Thanks - cool to hear about the GN - did not know that....I already have a 8.5" - this is in a Chevy P/U - that's why I'm asking. It is a 30 spline and I'm runnin' drum brakes - !abs.

Thanks, sounds so far like I'm safe. I know I'm losing plenty of HP through the 2 piece DS, but there's almost no way around it, unless aluminum is done. Only want to cross that bridge when I need to.

The 8.5s are fine. My buddy has one in his t/a behind a 468 BB and a th400...Runs in the 10.30s flashing the converter...Lifts the tires about 2 feet and the rear is fine.

We have a member on this site running 9.70s with a stock 8.5" in his full weight '79 Z28. I believe all he did was truss the tubes. The car was making over 700rwhp last I knew.

I've got plans to start making the 8.5 for the f body with out welding on the cast iron. That seems to have been the issue with the 8.8 rear. 8.5 ten bolt is a awesome rear. been around for quite awhile as well.
