Broken axle stuck in the auburn LS
So I can't push the remaining part of the splined axle in to get the c-clip out. I popped off the main caps and pulled the whole assembly out. I'm wondering what are my options if the axle is stuck in the LS. Supposedly I have an Auburn Pro series limited slip which is rebuildable (I didn't put it in). So far there is metal everywhere from my snapped axle. I broke about half an inch into the splines. I don't want to hammer on the broken piece of axle so I can get the c clip out, but I might have to. Can those springs n spider gears in the middle come out if part of the axle is stuck in there? This is on an 8.5 inch 10 bolt out of my 87 Turbo T. TIA

I got lucky one time with a Dodge Dakota. The RR axle shaft was broken right at the splines, I removed the shaft I was able to use a magnet to extract the broken splined stub. I didn't even have to remove the differential since all the metal was in the tube.

I used a magnet to get the loose stuff out. I finally just whacked the broken axle inwards in order to finally get the c clip out. Doing that caused a bunch of metal from the twisted axle to come loose. It didn't damage the splines as it hit the lip right before the splines start in the housing as I hammered on it a few times. Unfortunately, there is metal all over the place inside the spider gears which I'll have to take apart. It doesn't look like the spring loaded center piece is going to be much fun to play with. Think I need some special tool to compress it?

The Auburn spring and plates are the most dificult to replace. I would advise you not to do so and just pull the differential and clean it out with brake cleaner.
