Default driveshaft question

im putting a 9inch rear in my 98 trans am LS1 6speed. this rear is coming out of a 1989 camaro. im also ordering a denny's nitrous ready driveshaft for it. Now, heres my big question,- By changing rears, Will my driveshaft length change or will it be the same length as stock? i dont have the rear under the car yet. i still have to order axles and housing ends to retain ABS & TCS. Just wondering, because if they are going to be the same length, then i can order the D/S and have it here when i do the rear swap. Thank you all for help

you never have any idea what your DS length will need to be until you have the drive line assembled. Then you can use the guide on Denny's site and measure for the correct shaft.

it doesn't matter what someone else done. No car is the same. You have to wait until you have everything assembled and then measure. There is no other way to do it other then total guess, and guessing is what breaks parts.

i belive its about 1/2" longer for a 9" but definetly strongly agree get the rear in then measure that way it is exactly what you need and correct for your car

I was told it would be 1/2"-3/4" difference. But it wasn't. My factory D/S fit just right but I still plan on getting a new one for better strength not length.

Just installed my 9" also, and mine fit up perfect, the wear mark on the front yoke was at the same place as with the 10bolt, but still would like to upgrade for strength also.

It depends on which yoke you have for the 9".

The part of the joint in the D/S will be a 1310. The part in the 9" is 1350

Hello I believe that most Drivelines are built to be 1" shorter then bottomed out into
the trans. So we now have no 2 cars alike? I'm having some difficulty with this!

every single car is gong to be different. It's just a fact of life. 1/4" on the rear, 1/16" on the tranny, 1/8" from LCA movement, 1/32" from chassis flex etc etc. There is no X+N=Y. These are variables, not constants. So many things are different for every part that rolls off the assembly line. Then add different combinations of aftermarkets parts, different ages of vehicles, different histories of cars etc etc and you have very different outcomes. This is why what works for one, might not work for another. All this adds up to doing the job right and taking the time needed to to measure correctly.

When I installed my 12 bolt everyone told me to run the stock shaft and I would not have a problem. They were wrong. Some come out the exact same. Some stock shafts will not even fit back in at all. Some fit but are a little too tight. Like I said, variables.
