Default what rearend should I put in

I blew my stock rearend in my 02' WS6 today. I want to know what rearend I should put in it. My top 2 are definitely dana 60 or a 9 inch. Give me some ideas and some opinions.

i would go with the 9"..it's a proven rear with many gear options and adapters for our cars if you wish to retain abs, etc.

and it's lighter than the d60.

If you're an A4 I say 12 bolt, but if you're an M6 go with a 9".

I went with the S60, power loss they claim between the 12 and 9. but with the larger ring gear its stronger than the 9inch, plus with the group buy going on its cheaper than both of them.

It all really depends on the cars application. If autocross is your thing then you would want the lightest rearend you can get, and that would be a 12-Bolt. If your car is set-up for street/strip, then you should lean towards a S60 or a 9", your transmission has no real relevance in the matter.

As far as weight is concerned...

12-Bolt = 190 lbs.
9" = 205 lbs.
S60 = 215 lbs.

Those weights are a rough estimate, actual weight may vary with options (ie. larger spline axles, gundrilled axles, support covers, choice of spool/locker/posi).

In the end , do not take anyone's word for gospel, make your own choice. It's an expensive purchase and should be investigated accordingly. There are two thread in the group purchase section about the S60, discussed within those threads are the differences between the three rearends. Strange Engineering posted information within those thread about all the rearends, it would be worth your while to read-up before you buy... I did, and I chose the S60.

Group purchase price on a S60 is cheaper than both the 12-Bolt and 9", just send LS1speed a e-mail asking for a quote.

Good luck!!

I don't know about three weeks for a Strange. I placed my order in December, and I'm still waiting.

I do have an A4, but like Houdini said I don't think the transmission has any relevance. As far as prices, I don't mind spending a little more as long as I am getting my moneys worth. The car right now dose put a lot of power down, and it’s going to get moded a lot more in the next few months. I wish I could give you an accurate rwhp and rwt reading, but it hasn't seen a dyno in a while and I have had mods since. The last time it did any pulls it was around 400 rwhp and 390 rwt. Thanks for all the comments.

I am leaning toward a 9 inch, but I am going to do some research first. (Give me more opinions)

Either a 12 bolt or 9", both are an excellent choice. The 12 bolt saves around 30 lbs. weight and less drivetrain lose

I've ordered the S60 earlier this week. If this wasn't an option, I would prefer a 9" over a 12 bolt.

While weight (15lbs to 30 lbs or so over a twelve bolt?) is not that big of a deal for me, strength, true direct bolt in application, standard 35 spline axles, abs, and no future problems down the road while still being able to abuse it like a russian crack ***** are.

Just my opinion...

How much power do you plan on making? There are some 10 bolts on here in the 9s. In autos of course. But then again the trans has no relevance.

Go with a 9 inch or Dana 60, I broke my Moser 12 bolt twice with a 6 speed car. It was the pinonion both times, both times at the track. Do it right, do it once.

My Strange 12-bolt goes in tomorrow. It was ordered 11/17/2005 and just arrived Orlando, FL last week. Thye have bene back-ordered for Eaton posi units and that's been their holdup from what they've told me all along. There's another guy form this area who ordered the same time and he's STILL waiting, so, be prepared to wait if you order a Strange setup with the Eaton posi. Maybe they've caught up now ... dunno'. I'm just afraid if something happens with this new 12-bolt ... well, will it take me 12 MORE weeks to get a replacement?

Also, Strange supposedly has great customer support, however, all 3 times I called them, it seemed they did not want to give me the time of day. Hopefully this won't be the case if the rearend breaks right away.

Hey Jeb, congrats on finally getting yours. I got mine yesterday, and I ordered it 12/26/05. I thought the driveshaft would be shipped with it, but I guess that will be sent separately, unless a mistake was made. Did you get your DS along with the rear, or separately?

Thanks man. Glad to hear you got yours, as well. I had ordered a PTC 3.5" aluminum d/s ... had it installed about 2 months ago. I'll let you know how the rearend works out. You do the same and keep your head down.

Do the 12-bolt setups still have C-clips? If so, that's enough of a reason to get a 9" or a 60.
