Default rearend noise

Recently had motive 373's installed on my 98 Z. Every since I got them installed I've been hearing this whining noise during acceleration from about 15mph and up. Have not pounded on the gears at all. Got second opinion from different mechanic. He said it was gear whine and it needed to be redone. Shop that installed them said it was probably a bearing. Returned to where I had the gears done originally, shop put new bearings on and pulled rearend apart again. Got my car back and it's still making the same noise, but sounds worse this time. The shop is claiming that the pinion is perfectly aligned too. Anyone have any input on what this problem might be?

I'm not sure the shop put in the right fluid either. They put in non-synthetic 85W140. Could this be a problem? If I recall correctly, these cars are better with synthetic 75W90.

I don't think that the fluid...unless it was REAL thick....would affect whine.

I would have another shop check backlash. I've seen some guys take it too far and go with .008

Any good gear guy will tell you it should be between .008 and .012 I set mine at .010 and I only get the normal Richmond whine

Some shops go to the extreme and set it at exactly .008 which does'nt allow for expansion and may cause premature failure. Pinion depth and backlash are two different things. Ask the shop to tell you what the backlash was set at.

Also, if you want to...pull the cover and look at the shiny part of the teeth on the ring gear. It should have a nice even wear shape that extends all the way to the root of the tooth. If the shiny part is too close to the top of the tooth then it will whine.

I know that Richmond gears are noisy...I've got em...but I havent heard any thing about Motive.

Good Luck, Stu

Thanks for the input Stu. I'll try to find a gear expert to check it out.

This guy claimed to have pulled the rearend apart three times. But, still can't get rid of the noise. Time to switch shops!

Its been my experience that the rears whine to varying degrees after ring and pinion set-ups. On my 97 SS I had them set up twice by very well known drive train shops and still had some whine with genuine GM gears. I dont know about the zexel rears in our LS1s, but I decided to leave my stock 3.42s in till they break for this very reason. 44k and almost 900 passes on DRs and still holding up so far!!

It's really worse now. Finally got to take it on the highway today. Was noisy before I took it back to shop, but can now hear it over the radio at highway speeds. I know it's gonna make some noise, but would be nice to quiet it down.

Plain and simple Gears that are installed correctly and that have the proper break in... DO NOT MAKE NOISE! Richmends i have heard do though because of the material they are made of. But i have also heard of people that have them that never heard a noise. I know Gears aren't aspose to make noise thats why you don't hear anything with the factory gears...
