Default Just broke my 3rd tranny.

I just broke another built tranny and I am thinking of trying something new. Should I go with the 4L70E? I really need OD otheriwse I would just stick a T-350 or T-400 in it and call it good.

Do any of you have the 4L70E or had any problems with it or the install? I will eventually be running nitrous again once my new heads/cam combo is worked out.

I have a 4L70 tranny and have had some issues with it. I think it is a great tranny but I would make DAMN sure you go through it to make sure everything is solid internally. The 200R when built properly can handle 9's in a GN. I know guys that have run mid tens in F-bodies with "reworked" 4L70s.
Cheers,
Chris

Thx for the reply Chris.

I plan on getting whatever trans I get from Yank so it should be built fine but I still can't understand why I keep breaking the Sportsman units.

I am starting to seriously consider the TH-400 w/ 3.06 1st gear.

I would really investigate what is happening to your Tranny. H&C shouldn't be enough to break 3 trannies. I'd look at the PCM, drivetrain alignment, the driveshaft etc. before bolting in another unit.

The funny thing is. The first 2 broke before heads & cam. One had issues before I bough it. The 2nd one just lost it when my car was lowered without heads/cam. This one was on stock suspension (springs etc.), with heads/cam.

Before this one goes in I will have my new Spohn TQ arm and relocation brackets so hopefully that will help. I also have the vacume module kit installed and it was shifting ok but did have a litle blip in the 2nd gear area. I never changed any programing other than shift points.

Why don't you call Chuck at FLP and ask about their Level IV 4L60E? They have a great reputation and should easily hold up to heads/cam. I looked at the Yank Sportsman before I ordered my FLP, but the barrage of bad trannies caused me to go with FLP.

If you order one, just make sure you don't get ahead of me. LOL

I just put in Speed Inc's trans and I love it. It has not been in for a long time but It will hold what you have. If something breaks Tom Izzo will be there to help you out can't say the same thing for flp. Here is what you Do CAll Speed Inc., and talk to TOM IZZO then call flp and talk to chuck and see who is more willing to work with you. I can almost bet you go with a Speed inc. trans.

I don't know anything about Speed Inc's tranny or Tom Izzo, but what in the hell are you talking about when you say Chuck isn't cooperative? I've talked to him on the phone quite a number of times and he has been nothing but helpful. He has even put up with my ceaseless questions as I wait for my tranny to be built.

So far, you've claimed that the Speed Inc tranny will hold as well and is as reliable as the FLP Level IV. The Speed Inc tranny is totally unproven at this point. We don't know how well it will hold up or how reliable it is. We also have no idea how much power it can take.

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the Speed Inc tranny. The point is, we just don't know.

If it is $400 less and is as good as the FLP Level IV, go for it. So far, we have no information besides your testimonials that show that. At this point, all I see is an unproven transmission that is $400 or so cheaper than the FLP. I'd rather spend the extra $400 and go with a proven tranny.

I personally would call FLP about their level 4 tranny before looking at the 4L70. It is way cheaper and has been holding low 11's, high tens in some cars.
Good luck,
Chris

I like Joe (Black WS6) and his budddy Bos... and Tom IZZO does great work don`t get me wrong, but they have much to learn. I do hope the tranny hold up for you Joe. Please report back to us when you`ve put some miles and track time on it.

It is truly great for you guys to have someone you can trust do all the work to your car, I`ve bought things an deal with Tom before he is a great guy ... not sure why you think FLP isn`t. I guess we all have our favorites, but Chuck will take just as much time to make sure you`re happy as will the rest of the crew and when it comes to transmission he has a ton of experience.
We should be happy that there are two great shops in Illinois than to try to knock one of them down with baseless claims.

I am not flaming here, but they all seem to have issues and seem to have been rebuilt at least once.

My FLP Level IV, gen II has been doing well. It has about 30 dyno pulls and about 50 passes on it. Car has been on ET streets since October. I have all the parts that kill trannies... 4.10 gears, 4000 stall, 422ci stroker, torque torque torque. I have a billet servo in mine that makes the shifts a little harsher than most folks would want but it's doing great.

Dan is right. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

The FLP trans is far more proven at this point. Many people are very happy with it and I’m sure it’s an exceptional unit. BUT, if no one put the Speed Inc trans to the test, then we would never know just how good it might be. Having said that, my group will be putting Izzo’s trans to the test. We will have it in two of our cars by the end of the month, including mine. My car is only bolt-ons plus a cam, but the other car is far, far more serious. We both beat our cars very hard and will be reporting back on how it’s holding up. Joe’s car will also be a great example as he’s making a good deal of power too.

The point is, so far we have no reason to doubt Izzo’s trans, therefore I’m giving it a try. But we also have no reason to doubt FLPs trans as it’s proven it’s self very well. Either way, you probably can’t go wrong.

Here’s one thing I’d like to mention. When I first started talking to Izzo about a trans I wanted an FLP unit. The price of his unit made me change my mind, but not once did Tom ever bash the FLP trans or say that his was better. All he said was that “FLP makes a good product too”. Now that’s the type of guy I can respect. He can sell his stuff without bashing or downing the competition. I don’t know Chuck from FLP nor have I ever spoken to him, but if he is the type of guy that won’t bash to sell his product too, then you really can’t go wrong dealing with either guy.

I had problems with my 4L70, there used to be a thread that detailed what happened, however it seems to have disappeared.
E-mail me if you want specifics, I don't want to be ostracized more than I already am.
