Default GU2 vs. GU5

I recall that when the LT1 4th gens first came out, if you had the base GU2 rear gear set (2.73) your shifter would not have a "1" indicator and you could not select first gear (there was like a little plastic tab under there that some people cut out, so they could select first) If you had the "performance rear axle" option GU5 (3.23 gears), like my '94 did, your shifter had a "1" indicator.

I recently was discussing this with a few local enthusiasts and they pointed out that some of the LS1 era cars with GU2 have the shifter with a "1" gear selector.

Who knows the ground truth on this? When did it change? Ie. when did GU2 optioned F-bodies start getting the same shifter panel as GU5 cars?
