Default Help with clunk in rear end

Hi

98 F body A4

Started to get a clunking sound from the rear end when applying light throttle. It only happens under light load in higher gears. In addition, if I tap the throttle on/off it goes clunk, clunk, clunk. It feels tight under power and only happens when crussing at lower rpm. It feels like slack in the driveline.

I have the stock 10 bolt with a bmr torque arm and bmr relocation crossmember. It realy only started to make this sound after I put the torque arm on.

What should I check? Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks JA

i had that happen to me, a few days ago, then i took my car for a ride, and it sounded like i busted my driveshaft, i pushed the car home, check the driveshaft, it was fine, un joint was fine, poped the rear end over off, MISSING 9 TEETH IN MY RING GEARS!!!!! it was just as you explained, only on a light load, didnt seem to make the sound when to throttle applied, check your gears out

Hi

Sounds traumatic. If it happens I will call a tow truck. No pushing for me.

If I pull the cover off and find somthing wrong in the differential, it means tearing it down. Also, I have 273s and definately need a 342 or 373. I may as well thrash it until it blows up. I will be rebuilding it in the future anyway.

Thanks JA

This is a really old thread but I recently just had the same clunking problem.

Check the BMR Torque Arm Relocation Crossmember. I found on mine that the BMR Torque arm bushing moves inside the Relocation mount clamp. Kinda shitty since all the parts are from the same company.
