Unhappy Axle Problems

Are F-Body axles known for porosity and pitting from bad casting?

Are you talking about the axle bearing surface itself ??

I don't think it is caused by bad casting, as the axles are not cast. It is more likely caused by the combination of a relatively small bearing and relatively low hardness of the surface.

Yes, it is a common problem in higher mileage cars or cars that have had impacts to the rear wheels.

My car only has 53K mi. and it has not been in any accidents. I do agree it looks like the bearings in my car were harder than the metal spray that is on the axle where the bearing runs...

I put my new Moser 4-channel axles and a 10-bolt support cover on Wednesday. My roaring noise is gone. I changed the bearings too...

Can you comment on the quality/craftsman ship of these axles?

Thumbs up

The Moser Axles were of much better quality than the stockers. The Moser's look steel and the stocker's look like cast iron. I will be pleased with them if their hardness holds up.

Just wanted to say that they definitely are NOT cast iron, they are a hardened steel. Not quite the same quality as the Moser set, and the Moser axles are rolled/stamped instead of cut like the GM ones are.

Glad to hear they look real nice.
