I don't think it is caused by bad casting, as the axles are not cast. It is more likely caused by the combination of a relatively small bearing and relatively low hardness of the surface.
Yes, it is a common problem in higher mileage cars or cars that have had impacts to the rear wheels.

My car only has 53K mi. and it has not been in any accidents. I do agree it looks like the bearings in my car were harder than the metal spray that is on the axle where the bearing runs...

The Moser Axles were of much better quality than the stockers. The Moser's look steel and the stocker's look like cast iron. I will be pleased with them if their hardness holds up.
