Default Another gear break in question

So, I had my stock rear end built with an Eaton posi, and some 4.10 Ridhmond gears. I had a VERY reputable shop install these. After the install everything was good and it ran dead quiet. After about 25 mile of driving nice, I start to get on it pretty good. Then the gears start whining. I drive on it hard some more, and then they got REALLY loud. Took it back to the shop and he says everything is still where it should be and not out of place. He did say that the gears were not wearing correctly. He then installed a new set of 4.10's. So I have the car back now and have been driving good ofor about 200 mi. So whining yet.

When should it be safe to start driving her hard again?? Or never?? Please help

We recommend 500 miles with easy driving, plus Richmod gears can be noisey. You are very lucky that the shop replaced the gearset after you got into hard after just 25 miles.
The stock 10 bolts are a very weak pathetic unit, don't expect it to last forever. Bob

Well, I will make sure to drive at least 500 this time. Not sure why some places say there is no break in period. I understand that the 10 bolt is weak, this was just a solution to hold me over till I can get enough for a 9". Thanks for the info.

A minimum of 500 miles.

A good choice on your behalf would be to do at least 6 to 8 heat cycles before you even think of getting on it.

A heat cycle is defined as driving for 20-25 miles on the freeway and getting to a point where you can let the differential cool to ambient temperature. Kinda like driving to work, letting it cool all day, and then driving it home.... that would net you 2 cycles. Do this 6-8 times and then you can step it up a notch and drive it a little harder, gradually up to the 500 mile point and then your pretty safe from the noise monster.

Scott at dive line told me to heat cycle for the first 100 and then get on it.

I sure have heard lots of different answers. But I would rather be safe with this set. Looks like I will be doing what chicane said and heat cycle, and wait the 500 miles. Dont feel like having it rebuilt again!

My OPINION: Heat cycle them a couple/few times. 500 miles of EASY driving, no carzy speeds, launches or hard shifts. Then change the fluid and go have fun! Some have better luck w/ the 10 bolt lasting than others.
