howling Stange Dana 60
Well, put 90 miles on the dana 60 so far and man, does it howl BAD. Calling Strange today and going to ask some questions. How does everyone else sound? Also, it is quite for the most part on decel, but while just cruising, they are loud, and it only seems to be getting worse.
setup:
optional cover
4.10 gear
true trac posi
35 spline
I currently have 80w-90 in the axle

I have the same set up and went through the break in process of 50 miles stop let cool and then 50 more until 250 miles reached, other than taking the rear cover off and wipping it down and changing the gear lube at 1000 miles which is only 90 miles away. All break in has been acheived. Other than the whine the only thing I have is a small vibration at 60 mph plus. I have my pinion angle set at 1 1/2 degrees negative. So it is pinion angle or one of my wheels is out of ballance. I love my Strange Dana S60, I owned 2 Moser 12 bolts before this and the Whine from this I can live with.
I have a 2000 Camaro M6 and I had problems with my BMR torque arm hitting my speed sensor and the tunnel in my car. What torque arm are you running?

Well going up from 3.42's to a 4.10 they are a little noisey. Might be able to adjust them some though & quiet them up a little.
4.10's will cause way more noise problems than lower gears

Well, I think I will have a local shop, that I trust, look into the backlash on the gears. I have a feeling it can be delt with. I realize it will have some whine, but when I can't drown it out w/ the radio, it needs to be looked into.
And yes, I do have a adjustable BMR torque arm. The car is also lowered about 2inches. The rear is also setup for 4channel, so the speed sensor woudn't be an issue, but the very top part of the cover, hits/rubs the GAS TANK! It's not serious, but still bothers me. I've been watching it, and it shows no signs of major rubbage as of yet.

How does the handling w/the 60 compare to handling with the 12 bolt? The 60 weighs about 60# more than the fact'y 10 bolt - characterized as a "huge increase in unsprung weight" by one "suspension guru". My 60 went in last Fri - I'm still doing the same break in procedure..
thx
Nick

now i wish i would have waited. if people are having them rub the gas tank on normal driving whats going to happen after u dump the clutch at 6k on a slick. ill sell it before i jack my car back up. now this issue with whining and the huge delays others are experiencing. mine has only been delayed about 1-2 weeks as of now.

we can begin with an overtightned pinion bearing, less than a 100mi and the pinion bearing was nearly trashed, also a poorly cut set of gears(aka bad quality), pattern on gears was horrible, the carrier bearings were not looking to good either! so..... the housing looked to be well built, seems like whoever set the gears up from strange was having a bad day. ive got all the og bearings and gears may post some pics. sad that 2500+ $ , and it had to be gone through with less than 100 miles. strange did make good on it however, but it shoulda been done right the first time.

Just a thought on the gas tank deal, I think if you
took a heat gun to an emptied tank, you could push
in a little "relief" that would stay put when cooled.
As long as you have plastic, not metal. But metal
would respond well enough to the BFH.

If I were to rate the S60 with the Moser 12 and the stock 10 with gears. I would have to say that I am happier with the S60 and would rate it this way:
Out of 10 (10 being best)
Strange Dana S60
Build Quality: 9
Drivability: 8
Straight line performance: 9
Gear Noise: 7 (hardly any gear noise)
Moser 12 bolt
Build quality: 5
Drivability: 7
Straight line performance: 5
Gear Noise 5 (Very loud)
Stock 10 bolt
Good rear end but weak when mods start this is one of the first to go boom.
Just my opinion

Well, we just got my Formula on the road for the 1st time w/ the new Dana 60. At 50 mph I have a pretty loud howl, louder than a new rearend should be. This Dana replaced my Moser 12 bolt, and I've got to say that the Moser was alot quieter when it was new. Even after changing gears, posi's, and finally installing a spool my Moser was always quieter, than this Dana, after being rebuilt. I'll be calling Strange in the morning.

A buddy of mine got a Strange 12 bolt...from day 1 it has howled...it hasn't been horrible but man, when you pay $2000+ you would think they would spend a little bit more time making sure the gears were setup properly....

I'm debating right now as to which rear i want to go with in a few months when I swap my 10 bolt out. i was really looking forward to good stories on the S60, but it looks like that's not the case, at least not at the moment. Regardless of which axle I get, I'm going to have it totally torn down and double-checked for just the sort of problems Confuzed had - that seems to be the best thing to do no matter what axle it is. Kinda sad that one can pay $2500+ for an axle, and still need to have it checked when it comes in. They might as well ship the damn thing unassembled and cut the build cost off the axle.
