Default Roaring???

I just bought a car that has a really bad roar in the rear end. Sounds like it may be a bearing. IS that what it sounds like to you guys? How hard is this to replace?

If you dont know how I wouldn't try. Takes a little know how. My rear (Strange 12 bolt) howls like a scalded dog. Just what happens from going to the track and doing 5,000rpm dumps on slicks. If the noise doesn't bother you I wouldn't worry about it. Half the people on this board prolly have this condition. If it does, pick up a rebuild kit.

It is much worse than a gear howl. It is definately a bearing. It has got to be fixed. It is very loud.

If this is anything like what I went thru two years ago, the howl will be louder depending on what direction your turning, for me my rear passenger side bearing and axle were shot and scored. about 40-50 mph and turning to the left would just be louder than hell, turning to the right, hardly anything.

if your noise is that bad you might have to buy a new axle and bearing... I had to do this when I got my TA, and the yard I got my used axle at said it was common, they had a mountain of old scored axles in back....

all in all a pretty simple problem to either fix, or have fixed. good luck.

It sounds like it would be a main bearing in the chunk or something. It has the same pitch no matter which way you turn. The faster you go the louder it gets.

mine in my car was the same pitch no matter what but it ended up still being the right axle bearing.

My car just spit up the rt side axle bearing. It makes no noise. I was doing a rotate of teh tires and grab the wheel like checking for bad ball joint(top and botteom of wheel) and it moved about 1.0 inch. Tore it down and found that my axle was fine but the bearing was toast.

If yours is making noise while accel and decell than you have a carrier or pinion bearing bad. You can get a bearing kit w/shims for about 100.00. I would replace all while I was in there. Just my .02.
