Default gear question?

I have a 2002 Z-28 A4, it has the 2.73 gears, I believe it is a 2 series, 4-channel, 10 bolt. I would like to go to a 3.42 gear but was told by a speed shop ( A good one) that I would have to replace the differential to a 3 series (Auburn or Eaton). My problem, not enough money. Richmond makes a thick gear set that will work, but I heard that they are loud. Is there another gear(Ring&Pinion) that would work, and is quiet? My car will see just street time, with a Borla,ORY,Lid. Any help would be appreciated!

Thunder Racing carries Strange 3.42s and 3.73s for a 2 series carrier for $225. They also carry a Strange 4.10 for a 2 series which is what I will end up going with. I would go with a new gear and would stay away from buying a set of used gears to save some money because you never know what you are getting. If you get a reputable shop to do the install for you it shouldn't make to much noise.

Would like to hear from anyone that has replaced the 2.73s (2 series,A4) with 3.42 or 3.73 thick gear set, I would like to know if you get alot of gear noise? My 2002 Z-28 A4 is pretty loud with a Borla and no cats, was just wondering if I would be able to hear anything from the rear gears? A very competent speedshop will be doing the install, I know that is important. Just trying to get some feedback. THANKS

I have had Richmond 3.73's for a year now and at first they whined a little not bad. In the last few weeks they have gotten mega loud! Real annoying. Just had the pinion seal replaced and the tranny shop reset them and said nothing was wrong with the gears. but they are just as loud actually louder after the repair. Going to get them checked out by a different place. I had 2.73's stock.
I might pick up a set of motive gear 3.73 if I cant get the richmonds quieted down.

The 10 bolt case is pretty weak, and a lot of times after several launches the case becomes tweaked, and added gear noise is inevitable. A new set of gears may quiet it down for a while, but it is bound to happen again. Bob

Exotic Performance Plus, Will a rear end girdle help that at all?

I went from 2.73s to 3.73s in my old LT1 and had minimal gear whine but I coulda swore it got worse over time, eventually broke a couple teeth off my ring gear
