Rear end whine. I think.
Hey I have a 99 WS6 I picked up a few weeks ago and I am hearing a whining type noise from the rear mostly. I did a differential flush yesterday on it so the fluid is new and at the proper level. The level wasnt really low before either. The pinion seal is leaking a bit however. It still has the whining noise after the flush. When cruising 80 last night I noticed I could hear it a bit from the front too, so could it be the tires? It is not a posi rear end. What ratio rear end would this be?
Thanks.
Thanks.

As far as the bearing goes, when I push the gas, not to accelerate really just to hold it or like slowly speed up it gets louder then I can let off and it gets really quiet. Like you can tap your foot making the pedel move a bit and it goes whoo, whoo, whoo. At around 75 its not very loud at all. At 80 its louder. And below 75 like around 70 its fairly loud or very noticable.

I had a bearing go out on me last year, similar case, just got worse and worse...
You probably have a posi, just turn the driveshaft, not the tires to tell, or LET EM SPIN, i bet they both spin!

That's because it's probably a torsen differential... in a torsen diff, spinning one tire will make the other go in reverse.
One of the diff bearings and one axle was pretty scored up, causing aditional noise.

It is the ring and pinion gear making noise. They are just making a whining noise. Setting the backlash may help but may not do anything at all. It wont really hurt anything its not a bearing going out, as a bearing would be constant, and is not covered under most factory or aftermarket warrenty's so there is not much to worry about. Or at least that is what the master tech at work says
