Yeah, the 2 series carrier is 5/16 of an inch shorter. If you want to keep that carrier and use 3 series gears then you either have to use the spacer or buy special gears that are specifically designed for the 2 series carrier.
To find out if you have 2.73:1 gears you can do several things. The easiest is to look for the correct RPO code in your glove box. I think the 2.73 is GU2. The next easiest way is to raise the car and mark the drive shaft. Rotate it until the wheels make exactly one revolution. Note how many times the drive shaft had to turn including a portion of a turn. If it was less than 3 then you have a 2.73 if slightly more then it's a 3.23 or 3.42. Almost 4 turns is a 3.73 and four full turns with a little extra is 4.10. The last and hardest check is to remove the axle cover and count teeth on the pinion and ring. Do the math and you will know for sure.
Your M6 did not come with a 2.73:1. If you have a factory M6 with unchanged gears then you are running a 3.42 like the rest of us.
Factory installed 2.73:1 were only available to A4s which excludes the 1 on the automatic shifter console. In other words, it shows 2 - 3 and D whereas 3 series cars have 1-2-3-D ....
