I am curious about what's in my rear end, mostly because I want to change gears in it fairly soon. Is there an option code that I can check that will tell me if my rear is an Auburn or a Torsen? The car is a bit unusual to begin with. I bought it new, it's a 98, but it came with 235/55/16 tires and a 117 mph speed limiter, it also has a steel drive shaft instead of an aluminum one.

Either way, the only difference between the two is that the Auburn uses a clutch back and the Torsen doesn't, right? Are there different recommended rear end fluids between the two? Are they both a 3 series carrier, meaning I don't have to specify "special" gears for an Auburn if I have one?

Cars.....so damn complicated!

well they started putting the trosens in in 99. you can always jack the car up and turn one wheel if the other spins the same direction then it's a auburn. torsens don't use any springs or clutches for preload so each tire will turn the opposite direction like an open diff.

Aaah...good deal....but regardless of whether it is a Torsen or an Auburn, any gear set will fit, right?

A4? I'd check the RPO codes on the drivers side door - GU2 was 2.73 and came with the steel drive shaft, and a 2 series carrier, GU5 was 3.23 and a 3 series. Also if the car has/doesn't have ASR/TCS makes a difference too.

It's a 6 speed and it says "GU6" in the door.

OK, just wondered when you posted it had a steel drive shaft - thought only the M6 and 3.23 cars came with aluminum drive shafts.

The only difference in fluid is that the auburn requires a limited slip additive.

Carrier size depends on the gears it came with. If yours is a manual, it came with 3.42's and had a 3 series carrier.

Cool thanks....those 3.42's will be replaced with 4.10's soon...wish me luck...
