Default Do gears affect RWHP?

I tried a search but came up empty.

Does changing to a higher gear, 4.10 for example, affect RWHP numbers? Lets say you dyno 450 on stock gears and then go to 4.10 would the number go higher or lower? I know your 1/4 will go up, and thats the number that really matters, but I'm just curious.

As I understand, no they do not give you any horsepower. Gears simply put distribute the power more efficiently. A gear such as 2.73 like i have are made for more fuel economy than acceleration. Gears like 3.73 4.10 4.55 ect are more for acceleration and performance. Again they do not give any power they just get it to the ground more efficiently and effectivley. If im wrong someone please correct me with no hard feelings. Dont quote me on this its just my understanding.

The shorter the gear the less it will dyno at the wheels since you are increasing the rate of which mass accelerates (ie rear gears, trans gears, and ds)

I asked the same thing a while back .. someone posted graphs with no other changes except gears. According to his graphs, you will lose dyno numbers. As I recall, he went from 3:23's to 4:10 (no other changes) and lost approx. 10hp/10tq ... on the dyno.

I was going to say you lose about 10rwhp going from 3.42 to 4.10. Ever notice how most dyno queens still have 3.42's and no track times?????

That would be me...but not for long... Well, my car is not really a dyno queen since I am only making 375 to the wheels, but I do still have 3.42s for now, and no track numbers.

Not really intended for you, just a general statement that I know to be true. My sole purpose for the dyno was tuning. My favorite was when the 500 rwhp Cobras got beat by my measly 395 a few years back.

Back in the day my dad had a 63 I 327 vette with a 4speed and something like 4.56 gears and he said he'd **** off all the 427h/o monsters on the street. Goes to show you e/t is the only number that really matters.

a shorter gear ratio, such as going from a 3.42 to a 4.10, increase linear torque output. as for the actual horsepower figures, i dont know. torque is what matters....
