Default Gear swap, should I do it myself?

Setup are rear end in a 2000 ss with help when I worked at Glosserman Chevrolet. Thinking about pulling the carrier and just swapping the ring gear and swapping the pinion using all the same bearings and shims on my trans am. Anyone tried it at home with good success? Run into any probs? My only doubt it that the shim kits come in multiple different ranges and to buy each kit would cost more than the damn gears. Thus, if I don't buy the right kit, the car sits up during the week in which I have to catch a ride. Theoretically, if I pull the pinion bearing and press it onto the 3.73 pinion and unbolt the old ring gear from the carrier to replace it with the 3.73 ring gear, it should be able to all go back exactly like it was before right? I know it's not that hard to get a rear end setup as people say, just haven't done it this way before.
