Default Axle leaking fluid, bad gasket, causing gear whine?

When I accelerate I can hear my gears whining like all hell. I took a look under the car and noticed my axle was leaking and figured it needed a new gasket. Is the lack of fluid in there causing the gears to whine or did I just not break them in properly?

That's going to suck finding metal shavings in there when I change the fluid. =(

What can that cause? Should I buy new gears? Is this damaging my rear-end in any way?

You could be leaking from:

pinion seal (where the driveshaft bolts up)
axle seals (right behind the hub where the axles go into the housing)
cover gasket

They all contribute to running out of gear lube, which could lead to noisy gears. Fix your leak (most people use RTV, some like 2 gaskets with RTV) and fill it up and see if the noise quiets down.

I would doubt it, but there is always hope.

Rear end noise never means something is working properly.

What is the history on the rear?

the rear has had a normal wear and tear history. it's got 140,000 on it and has only seen the track once for 3 runs. it still runs and shifts fine it just whines a lot. i will admit though i didn't break the gears in properly. i wasn't supposed to get on it for about 300 or so miles and i did.

i had the pinion seal replaced when i got the car so it is probably just a bad gasket, since i can see fluid leaking from the axle housing.
