Joined the broken 10 bolt club today *Updated, with more carnage!*
just driving arround today when all of a sudden, bam rear axle locks up. Breaks free again after a second and I immediatly drive home to check it out. Pull the diff cover and find:
whats that large piece next to the magnet you ask?
Its what's left of the bolt that used to be here:
and apparently bounced arround quite a bit:
Now the thing is 2 bolts fell out but I only found the one. This is also a stock 10 bolt that has never been touched other than regular fluid changes, so I dont know what caused the bolts to back out.

2 bolts just snapped off the carrier:
Scared up the housing pretty bad too:
At this point Im not sure what I should do. The car sees the strip MAYBE once a year, for the most part its my DD and ocasinal autocross car. My funds right now really wont allow for a 12 bolt or 9". But at this point I need a new diff and gearset so that ~900 or so. Either way im gonna trade up to some 4.10's

more 10 bolt carnage!
went to pull the ring gear tonight and noticed a crack below where the carrier bearing mounts:
so I wiggle it a litte and bam! breaks right off!
It amazes me that all this damage was done WITHOUT shearing any teeth on the pinion or ring gear.

i ve seen this several times its very common on the zexel carrier i would keep your 10 bolt and just buy the eaton posi unit and a t/a cover since your on a budget.
thats what i always recommend to my customers that cant afford to go the 12 bolt or 9 inch way.

I had the exact same thing happen to my 10 bolt, except i did it on a 10mph WOT. I came out of a subdivision went WOT, went to 2nd gear backed off and started hearing a gravely noise coming from the rear. I pulled over and my car is leaking diff liquid everywhere. As soon as i went WOT is when mine blew because i had a nice 1/8 mile trail to where i stopped to check. I got a pic exactly like the 2nd one you posted, lol. I just got done putting a DLS 9inch with 3.89 true trac in mine after 6 months of scratching up enough money to do it.

If you've broken one, bite the bullet and go with a 12 bolt or 9 inch. Putting money into another 10 bolt will have you cussing soon wondering why you didn't learn your lesson the first time. I know, I went through two 10 bolts before wising up. By the way, neither of them broke at the track so lack of track time is no reason to stick with a weak rearend.

Too start off with, I know the 12bolt, 9inch & S60 are the way to go. But pics and stories like this blow my mind simply because the cars have few if any mod's. I have run 4.10's, 4.30's & currently 3.90's both the 4.30's and 3.90's were and are being sprayed. I have made 100's of 1/4mile passes with this 10bolt and only had breakage 2 times. Once with server wheel-hop broke 2 teeth off the ring gear (my fault) at the track. The other time the torsen posi gave up at the track.

If sticking with the 10 bolt you should consider the detroit trutrac for $350. PM me and I can get you the part number and where I got it from......Don't want to **** of the mods with a non sponsor quote.
I absolutely love mine.

Why did you wiggle it? Now you really broke it bad. If you hadn't messed with it, you could have put some liquid nails or epoxy, a coat of paint, and put it on ebay, and run like hell. Just joking. I couldn't resist. BTW, that mushroom of metal on the left looks like you took a 45 to it. If you did, I couldn't blame you.

I busted the pinion gear in my 3.73 geared TA girdled 10 bolt.
The install of my Rossler TH400 did mine in.
Didn't even consider building another 10 bolt.
I threw a 2.73 gear 10 bolt I had laying in the backyard (guy gave it to me for free if I would haul it off) in the car just to get it mobile and started looking for a built rear.
Got a Strange 12 bolt with 4.10s and a spool ready to go in now.
