Default cost to upgrade to 3.42

I currently have 2.73's in my Z. What is a guess on the cost to upgrade to 3.42's?

thanks,
Chad

Gears and install kit typically run 300-350 dollars, shop rate is 75-85 $ and labor is 3.5-5 hours + tax.

You may want to consider 3.73, 2.73 to 3.42's is a good jump but guys who have 3.23 to begin with dont make much of a increase from 3.23 to 3.42, ive done it in a 12 bolt, it didnt help.

Depends. You can get a 2 series 3.42s to get a direct swap and call it a day or swap your carrier and the stock 2.73 w/ 3 series carrier and 3.42s. I paid the guy $400 w/ parts and labor for the swap.

You can also go ahead swap the whole rear axle just make sure you have the right channel.

When I swapped mine, I just bought a complete used 3.42 axle assembly with the tubes cut off of it (for cheaper shipping) for $150 off ebay. Swapped the gears and the 3 series torsen carrier and rolled on. Cost me $150 plus $100 for a master install kit with bearings and all. I did the swap myself. Don't forget to budget for a tune to correct your speedo.

BTW, make sure you get one with 3 channel abs if you don't have TCS so you don't have to swap the reluctor ring.

I did my 2.73 swap to 3.42 at the end of March. I discovered one of my axles was screwed and I have been waiting on the axles I ordered to come off back order. I spent 200 on the gears and like 120 for the bearings and all the install stuff. You can rent almost all the tools from autozone and do it yourself to save money. Keliente did an awesome write up in the stickies and it helped me gain the confidence to do my install.
