Default Pros and Cons going from 2.73 to 3.42?

I recently bought a 00 ss with an A4 and 2.73. Been suggested going to a 3.42 would be a good idea. Just wanted to know how it worked for others.

Did it cost anything in MPG for the lower gears, friend tells me the 3.42 is the perfect gear for my stock daily driver car, that I will be happier with them over the 2.73.

Looks like i can get a set installed for about $400 from what he is telling me.

TIA
B

If it's an SS it shouldn't have 2.73's. Pretty sure all SS's and WS6's came with 3.23's.

Check your door code for GU5, should have 3.23's
I had 2.73's but mine is a Z28, I went the 3.42's and gained .5 in the 1/4 mile and gas mileage was about the same.

Yea, you should have 3.23's, Double check to make sure, if so its not worth it to go to 3.42's

Pretty sure the 2.73 cars have no first gear selectable. And the 3.23 do.

Nope my 02 Z had OD D 2 1 or whatever it is.

the the original poster if you do have 2.73s then make the switch; you'll be very happy with it. When I had the switch in my old Z it really woke the car up.

404: No cons found going to 3.42s if you don't have 3.23s already

If you do have 3.23 you can step up to 3.73s.

Maybe the lt1 didn't have the first gear selectable on 2.73 cars. It is 96z28.

The only problem I've had making the switch is very bad wheel hop when trying to do a hard launch. That may be due to some poor/bad suspension components, than anything else.
