Default 3 channel swapped with 4 channel possible?

I've read the sticky and recent posts but didn't quite find my answer. I was wondering as to whether or not I could just take the internals from a 4 channel system and put them into my 3 channel setup. The one in my car is a 3.08 setup with a 2 series carrier obviously (3 channel). the other is a 3.42 with 3 series carrier. I was hoping to just pick up an abs reluctor ring and have that pressed onto the 3.42 rear assembly and be able to use it in my 3 channel setup....anyone know the truth to this? thanks in advance!

Pretty sure you can do just that. I don't think there is any difference in the axle housings (2/3 series), just the differentials.

But I'm sure someone here can give a definitive answer.
