I'd put your car on jack stands and rotate the rear while the transmission is in neutral. Check for any clunking noises, and make sure it is not a loose brake caliper. Bob

Thats how my rear end broke. I was driving to Carls Jr one night. I was at a light and revved up the car to 3k. Lets it idle again, the light turned green, and I rolled out slowly. When I was going like 25mph I felt I ran something over, I was like WTF? I looked back but saw nothing on the street. I drove under a bridge and heard a clunking sound. At first I thought it was an exhaust leak but the noise stopped when the car stopped. So I ate, got in my car and tried to back up. My car stopped. It felt like I hit a wall. So I tried it again and same thing. So I rolled forward then rolled back again. That worked so I decided to drive it home and check it out the next day. As im driving cruising at 35mph. All I hear is my rear end starts making a weird sound then BAM! the whole car starts shaking, so I pulled over. I looked under the car and there was a trail of fluid. I left a big puddle on the street. Smelled like *** too. I got it fixed under warranty though. The shop said a bolt or something in the posi came lose and managed to get wedged in between the gears and was shot out thats why there was two huge holes on the cover... hmmm... get it checked out.

Similar issue..
Have a '96 Camaro. Tranny will go into reverse, but it won't move. Felt like maybe the brakes, but after taking them apart I realized they're fine. No damage or wear. I tried rotating the rear in reverse by hand with the vehicle on stands and the tires and brakes off, and it is still locking up. Forward it moves fine though. Any ideas?

Does the input shaft have a ton of slop? My car did this when I roasted the input bearings, the pinion would bind up in the housing whenever I tried to back up.

I tried posting pictures. It said an administrator has to approve the pics. The inside of the diff looks fine. Clean, nothing appears to be damaged. A friend said to remove the drive shaft and then check if the diff and the tranny rotate in both directions to make sure it's the rear end. The tranny might be locking up in reverse.
