Default Ford 8.8" and Ford 9" the same rear?

My t-bird and other fords come with a 8.8" ring gear as far as I know. Never had any problem with it. Now I can't imagine my t-bird came with a stronger rear than my Z, but is the 8.8 and the 9" the same rear just the number rounded up? It can't be.

Ok thanks. And not to be a know it all, but the v6 supercharged super coupe tbird also had the 8.8 because that's what I have.

but anyway, so I'm pretty sure the 8.8" is the ring gear diameter. Is the 9" also the ring gear, but only .2" larger? If so, I imagine it's also heavier in other ways too then. In a slightly different direction, so my brother's 1999 f150 2wd I think has the 8.8, and his 2005 f150 4x4 has the 9 inch? The housing is bigger on the '05 anyway. That sound right?

The base V-6 NA '89-'97 T Birds also got the 8.8 center section as Ford did not want to tool up a whole other center for the independant rear of the lower powered cars.

The other difference between the 8.8s and 9s (besides the size difference) is how the pinion meshes with the ring gear, it hits it lower on the 9". Then the obvious difference of how the whole center section/carrier comes out of the front of the 9" housing vs. the 'normal' way the carrier comes out of the 8.8.

he has the extended cab with suicide rear doors, whatever that cab model is called, if it makes any difference. 4.6 liter I believe.
